VIETNAM: Capacity Building for Renewable Energy Development

Meeting held on June 1, 2010 in Hanoi, Vietnam for the ADB funded project on Capacity Building of Renewable Energy Development.

Through this 4-year TA, e.Gen is currently supporting Electricity Vietnam and its 3 Power Corporations (NPC, SPC and CPC) in implementing 10 mini-hydropower plants and 9 transmission lines across rural Vietnam. The project is designed to improve access to electricity in the mountainous provinces in Lai Chau and Dien Bien Provinces. Grid extension and rehabilitation of distribution networks serving poor communes are also being implemented in Lai Chau and Dien Bien, Tra Vinh and Soc Trang Provinces.

Activities Performed:

  1. Identification and Ranking of Potential Sites
  2. Review of feasibility studies,
  3. Detailed design documents and Bidding documents; and
  4. Supervision/monitoring of construction

Milestones:

  • Construction of the first two hydropower plants in Aro Rang and Lia Chau is set to begin in 2011

Impact:

This USD 250 million program is set to improve access to electricity for nearly 2 million people in rural Vietnam.
